Joining a club

How do I go about joining a club or society?
The Clubs and Societies Centre, found on the 2nd floor of the Bloomsbury Building, sells memberships throughout Joining Fortnight. You can also buy membership online from the CSC reception throughout the year. ‘Look, Try, Join’ - which encompasses Freshers’ Week and the subsequent four weeks – is the process by which you can find out the details of clubs and societies you’re interested in (Look), take part in taster events and trials (Try), and then pay your fees to become a member (Join).

Where does the money I pay for membership go?
It goes directly to the Club or Society that you join and contributes towards your chosen club/society’s activities. The amount you pay is set by the club/society treasurer each year and varies depending on the levels of activity they provide.

What should I expect as a member of a club or society?
Every club and society is different but as a minimum each must provide its members with at least two events, such as fixtures, parties or lectures, per term. Most provide much more than this. Always find out from a club or society what they offer their members before you pay.

Once I’ve joined, what should I do next?
• Get in touch with the clubs and societies you have joined to let them know you are a member. You can do this via email or by leaving a message with CSC Reception.
• Get involved in the club/society, turn up to their events and make sure you are getting your money’s worth
• Hold the committee to account, make sure they are running your club or society in a clear and transparent way and are keeping you informed about what’s going on
• Ask for reports and feedback on the finances – it’s your money, find out how it’s being spent
