Introduction
The BUCS Individual Championships 2009 will be taking place this year from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th of December.  This event is a highly-competitive individual fencing tournament, bringing together the best of British university fencing under one roof.

Uniquely among our tournaments, UCL Union pays for transport, tournament entry and accommodation (up to £20/ppn).  In practice this means that the only real cost of attending is the meal after the competition.

As it is a prestigious event, we would like to send the best teams we can.  We are limited to 6 male and 6 female places for each weapon, so priority will be given to team fencers.  However, we don't normally fill all the places so all intermediate fencers are welcome (and encouraged) to apply for this fun and high level (and free!) tournament.

BFA licenses (or national equivalents) are required.  We will be asking for small deposits for accommodation in the event of last-minute cancellations (see below).  If anyone is interested, please contact Guy Woodward (Men's I Captain) at g.woodward@ucl.ac.uk.

Schedule
The events are scheduled as follows:

Friday 4th of December:
11.00: Men's Epee
12.15: Women's Sabre

Saturday 5th of December:
09.00: Men's Foil
09.45: Women's Epee

Sunday 6th of December:
09.00: Women's Foil
09.45: Men's Sabre

Transport
We will be getting the train up to Beeston Station from St. Pancras, though it is probably advisable to get tickets through to Nottingham, in case you want to go straight to the station from the tournament.  Transport from the hotel to the tournament will be by taxi.

Both train and taxi transportation will initially have to be paid for by competitors.  Competitors must keep hold of their tickets or a receipt and pass this on to the Tour Manager.  All transportation costs will subsequently be refunded by the Union via BACS payment, so we will also need to know your bank details if the Union has never paid you via BACS before.

Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided by the Club at a nearby hotel - generously paid for by UCL Union.  As in previous years we will probably use the Rockaway Hotel in Beeston, which is right next to Beeston station and a short taxi ride away from the competition.

The Union will pay up to £20 per person towards accommodation for each day they are competing.  This will cover most, if not all of cost of the hotel, but if it does not, competitors may be required to pay the difference (which will be very small).

Breakfast is provided by the hotel, and we usually go out for dinner, either in Beeston or Nottingham itself.

What We Need to Know
Please email your entry to g.woodward@ucl.ac.uk with the following information:

1. Name
2. Weapon(s) that you would like to fence
3. What nights you will be staying at the Hotel

The Tour Organiser will decide who to prioritise in the event that we have too many applicants for each weapon.

Deadline for Entry
Please inform us of your intention to compete before:
Thursday the 12th of November

Please ensure we have received your deposit cheques by:
Thursday the 19th of November

If we haven't received a cheque or other similar deposit by this time, we will withdraw your entry.

Deposits
Due to problems caused by last-minute cancellations in previous years, this year we are introducing a deposit policy.  Anybody entering the tournament will be required to provide a cheque for the value of £20 for each day they intend to compete.  We would prefer cheques, but cash will do in a pinch.

These cheques will be kept safe and will be returned to you in Nottingham.  If, however, a competitor cancels at short notice and it is too late to amend our hotel booking, UCLU Fencing will cash your cheque and put it towards the cost of the room.

The BUCS Individuals represents a huge investment for UCL Union.  They willingly shell out over £80 per person per day (£20 accommodation, £20 entry, £40 or more transport) in order for us to send a team to compete.  If we have the maximum number of entries we are allowed (6x3x2 = 36), then it is costing the Union thousands of pounds.  It is not acceptable for us to ask them to pay for empty hotel rooms, and this is why we are asking for deposits this year.
