1) Can I advertise positions for students in my own home?
Unfortunately we do not advertise jobs for private individuals. This is because we cannot guarantee that UCL students have been authorised to work with children or vulnerable adults. Also we do not advertise jobs for private individuals to avoid any potential problems with tax and national insurance contributions.
2) Can I advertise overseas positions?
Yes, but only if students are contracted in the UK and paid in the UK.
3) Do my company’s details have to be placed on the website?
Unfortunately, we cannot advertise for companies where we have no proof of address/existence. However only UCL students are able to view your contact details.
4) What happens if you feel that the information I provide is misleading?
If at any point UCL Union feels that the information received is misleading, extravagant, or fictitious, we reserve the right to refuse to advertise in the interests of UCL students.
5) Do we have to be specific in the job advert?
If an advert is vague, UCL Union will therefore decline, as we need to know the basics of the company that wishes to employ UCL students.
6) Does an advert have to contain a rate of pay or date?
Yes; otherwise UCL Union would not be able to see if their students are receiving the minimum wage. Where the date is concerned, we need a start date, as well as an end date.
7) Would it be possible to advertise commission pay?
No; we don’t do commission based jobs due to students working hard for very little pay – only constant income is acceptable.
8) How much should I pay students for work?
The minimum wage is £5.52 for anyone over 21, and this increases in November every year. Although this is the figure for those over 21 UCL Union JobShop does not advertise any jobs below this amount regardless of the age of the student.
