An alliance of hepatitis B and C charities have come together to create World Hepatitis Day and raise awareness of the illness. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, usually caused by viral infection. Hepatitis B and C together kill approximately 1 million people a year. 500 million people around the world are currently infected with chronic hepatitis B or C and one in three people have been exposed to one or both viruses.
Vaccinations are available against hepatitis B. If you have not been vaccinated and think you may be at risk, visit your GP (most UCL students can register with the Gower Place Practice) to have the jab and get tested.
