HANDS OFF OUR WEDNESDAYS!

Hello one and all!
A superlatively Happy New Year from your Union and a jolly warm welcome into the hearty embrace of 2007!

Everyone recognises the importance of having a little sacred space where we can kick back, get away from work and do a bit of that nifty personal development stuff. With that in mind UCL and UCL Union have a policy to Keep Wednesday Afternoons Free. This means that no teaching activities should be scheduled after 12.55pm on Wednesday and if they absolutely have to be, alternative arrangements should be made for those who want to get involved, leaving you lot free to practice your sport, hobby, faith or whatever it is you like to get up to on a well-deserved afternoon away from the grindstone.

Unfortunately not everyone is aware of their right to a little time for themselves, and still more people (particularly postgraduates) suffer because they have their Wednesday afternoons gobbled up by wonky teaching schedules. To redress the balance, next week we’re running the HANDS OFF OUR WEDNESDAYS campaign, to remind everyone just how vital the freedom to get extra-curricula really is.

Next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (9th – 11th January) between 11am and 4pm, we’ll be hosting the HANDS OFF OUR WEDNESDAYS campaign in the North Cloisters. It’s a sort of cross between traditional student activism and one of those weirdy organic installation-art things. We’ll have some hand-shaped stickers handy (arf arf) and what we need you to do is scribble down what you do on Wednesday afternoons and why that time is important to you. As you adorn the boards with your various activities, it’ll serve as a reminder to college staff as to why they need to Keep Wednesday Afternoons Free and also let your fellow students know that time belongs to them and maybe give them a few illuminating ideas of how they might make the best of it.

So make sure you get involved – next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the North Cloisters. What do you do just for you?
