About Us
UCLU Jazz Society was founded over forty years ago. At its core is the UCLU Big Band, backed up by Vocal Group and several Small Bands, covering a wide variety of Jazz genres ranging from traditional jazz to the contemporary jazz. During the last academic year alone, the society has staged two shows in the West End’s Bloomsbury Theatre, traveled to Cologne on tour, performed concerts in UCL’s quad and the Edward Lewis Lecture Theatre and has provided small jazz bands for several gigs, both within and without the University. In addition, the society holds an open jazz jam session once a week in the UCL Union bar, an event which has become extremely popular amongst musicians and non-musicians alike. Providing a good excuse to drink while listening to live jazz!
In previous years, the jazz society’s activities have taken it on tour to the Czech Republic, Spain, France and Holland. It has commissioned compositions and arrangements for its performers, produced several recordings and organised workshops to encourage those less experienced musicians who are keen to get involved.
Apart from being totally dedicated to the musical success of the society, we also attempt to provide a vibrant social network for everyone with an interest in playing or listening to jazz. There are frequent outings including gigs and concerts around London, as well as some less jazz-orientated social events!
The jazz society was awarded Society of the Year in both 2000 and 2001, and its committee members and contributors have been awarded various University accolades on numerous occasions. This success is particularly remarkable given that UCL has no music department of its own, and it is testament to the hard work and commitment of its members and organisation that it continues to move from strength to strength.
