Hello one and all and welcome to the website for the UCLU Jazz Society! Within these pages you can read about our history, and find out how you can meet us, watch us, join us, or hire us!
The Society currently boasts a fighting strong Big Band, a swinging and soulful Vocal Group and of course our hip Small Bands dishing out all your favourites in jazz, funk and blues. All of these groups perform in our annual show every November in the Bloomsbury theatre which is a testament to the diverse range of talent in the society.
The Academic Year So Far...
The November Show this year was entitled Unprotected Sax and was a resounding success featuring no less than seven ensembles - the Big Band and Vocal Group, Latin, Blues, Swing and Soul bands, and a Sax quartet.
In addition we also had the opportunity to upstage our Garage show last year "A Blues Brothers Tribute", performing a bigger and better version "The Bloomsbury Blues Brothers" in the Bloomsbury theatre the week before Unprotected Sax. This show was also a great success - despite being during reading week!
These shows aside it has been a busy term for the society with over a hundred members to look after - several individuals have started new bands of varying types, we've played at Jazz Jammin' every week in Phineas, the Big Band and a Small Band performed at Christmas in the Quad, in support of the chairty SANE, and we've provided bands for various groups within the union and the college on request. On the socials front we've been to the Blues Bar, the Spice of Life and the Roundhouse among others, members of the society joined the Music society for some Christmas Carolling, and we've had other non-musical socials including a Pub Crawl, a Christmas Dinner and many nights spent in Phineas post rehearsals!
