People and Planet is a student network that works to end world poverty, protect the environment
and defend human rights. We have groups in hundreds of UK universities and some in Sixth Forms
too. To get a better idea of the national organisation, take a look at the national site.
We hold meetings every Tuesday in the Bloomsbury Conference Room, on the second floor of
the Bloomsbury Theatre, from 6-7pm. Everyone is welcome at meetings, no matter what
background you have or whether or not you have done anything like this before. The more input the
better! Take a look at the events section of the website to see some of the events we have planned.
So what are we planning on doing this year? If anyone has anything in particular that you really want
to do we'd love to hear from you. What we do really depends on what our members want us to do!
Take a glance at our campaigns section to find out about the separate campaign strands we ran last
year. Amongst other things we'll be preparing for World AIDS Day, the National Climate March, and
attempting to persuade UCL to adopt an environmental policy and also an ethical investment policy.
We've also been campaigning about plans to build new coal fired power stations, particularly Kingsnorth which is being proposed by E-on.
Ways we go about campaigning can involve one or more of the following: stalls in the union to raise awareness, getting people to sign petitions, submitting proposals which will hopefully become official
union policy, writing to MPs, writing to Malcom Grant (UCL Provost), holding demonstrations, working
with other societies, arranging talks and meetings, organizing events and many more. Ever
since People & Planet has been at UCL it has been amongst the most active campaigning societies
and we don't envisage this changing any time soon!
