For all those interested in joining our club/society, the following details should help answer some questions or clarify matters somewhat.

As an affiliated society to the UCL Union, we are under rules and regulations to offer our training sessions only to current UCL students (either undergraduate or postgraduate, full or part time).

Being and remaining affiliated offers our society many advantages and most importantly offers you unparalleled opportunity to try us out without undue expense and effort on your part, whilst remaining fully insured in the event of accident or injury.  However, in order to remain in this forunate position, the UCL Union requires clubs/ societies to have a minumum number of members in their clubs/ societies.  Currently that number is 30 and this quota must be fulfilled by the end of Joining Fortnight (around end of October). It is also important for all UCL students to continue obtaining membership to our society, whatever the time of year, as the more members we have, the larger the room we will be given to teach you in.

For students of other London universities, UCL staff, UCL alumni, ex-UCL students and qualified doctors, there is an option of obtaining affiliate membership with the UCL Union, if you wish to train with us.  However, the affiliate membership to the UCL Union is seperate to the joining fee to our society.

For current students, you may obtain membership at the CSC, 2nd Floor Bloomsbury Building opposite the Christopher Ingold buildiing.  Ask at reception for the location of where to register for clubs/societies membership.  Please check that you are registering for membership of "Shorinji Kempo".  Currently the fee is set at the minimum value of £2.

For affiliate membership, the same process applies but you must first register as an affiliate to the UCL Union at the Sabbatical Suite, 4th Floor UCL Union building, 25 Gordon Street (building next to the Bloomsbury building).

As a Shorinji Kempo branch recognised by the British Shorinji Kempo Federation (BSKF), we are also under rules and regulations to have any people participating in Shorinji Kempo activities to register as members whereby those people are all insured by the BSKF in the event of accident/injury.

Please note that obtaining membership, both for the UCL Union and the BSKF, is important as they will be ultimately responsible in the unlikely event that anything untoward occurs.

On the positive side, obtaining BSKF membership will automatically include membership of the World Shorinji Kempo Organisation (WSKO) and will have opportunities to grade and advance to the higher levels where you will be taught yet more interesting and useful techniques (that includes differing coloured belts as you advance upwards).

While we will still welcome you at any of our training sessions and allow you to participate even if you have no membership at all, we can only allow you to try out the your first few sessions with us for free.  Thereafter we would need you to apply for Provisional Membership (costing £4) which will insure you for a further 30 days of training.  If after this period is over, or during it, you wish to obtain Full Membership with all the priveleges, you will have to pay a further £34 which will insure you for the whole year and includes membership to both the BSKF and WSKO.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
