This week will of course go down in history as the week where the BBC news website gave up, eschewing the silent lurking horror that is life in 2007 and decided to lead with the story of a puppy having its head successfully freed from a watering can.
The world stood still and collectively went "awwww" at this story (complete with picture) and I would dare any of the many people who will reply to this email with insulting vowels and adjectives (oh so many adjectives) to first gaze upon the image of the wateringpuppy and not be moved.
I expect so much abuse now.

1. WOAH HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH and THE EAST RISES AGAIN!
Good thing too, because UCL Union is holding its Winter Ball at Heaven on THURSDAY 13TH OF DECEMBER. Being a joint effort between Milkshake and VODPOP, you'd be something of a madman/madwoman/trowel to miss out. Featuring all manner of music (including an Indie/Electro room for you tight t-shirt wearing heroes), and with tickets being a mere sniffle at £12, and 519 confirmed attendees on COUNTENANCETOME.com, get in or get out of my (hypothetical) sight. Expect another all-student email about it next week. Now... GET EXPECTING!
And Vladimir Putin's favourite UCL Union event, Glasnost' returns for its final outing in 2007: GLASNOST' SUB ZERO. We've got the coolest vodkas, specialist TWO FOR ONE cocktails, latest east european tunes and LIVE MUSIC...all for free! The Masaryk Society will be offering free slavic snacks so be sure to get there early...
Plus a special Glasnost' musical treat will be provided by the TRANSILVANIA BAND.
Transilvania band is an international collective based in London which involves musicians from Transilvania, Slovakia and Finland. Their high energy acoustic music, based on traditional instruments and is spiced with East European Gipsy, Latino and Jazz numbers is sure to be a great addition to Glasnost' Sub Zero!
2. DEAD MAN IN A BOX WANTS YOU
The only improvisational comedy group named after the only corpse on display in UCL, "DEAD MAN IN A BOX" are landing at the Garage Theatre next week on Tuesday the 11th and Wednesday the 13th of December. Watch several wonderful people taking the iron ore of your suggestions and alchemically converting them into comedy gold (or at least comedy plutonium). It starts at 8.30pm and is only £3, so with every single show at the Garage Theatre this year so far selling out, you'd be advised to get there at 8 to buy tickets.
And then laugh. Please.

4. CLUB TROPICANDA
In the spirit of Christmas, POPAGANDA brings 3 amazing bands + Rare Fm's finest djs as well as club night djs to the comfort of your own union!! On top of that we will be having cakes, face painting, balloons, sweets, cheap alcohol and...anthropologists?!
Yes, once you get an anthropology society celebrating christmas in an alternative indie club night, it doesn't get more diverse than that. And that is the point of Club Popaganda, a diverse night with any possibility within the loosely labeled indie world. Like some reviewer described, "an eclectic clubnight for mods to rockers, indie kids to ravers, or even indie-ravers".
Bands:
Brontosaurus Chorus
Brontosaurus Chorus are, in summary, a 7-piece indie popular beat combo.
The band takes their influence from...Sonic Youth, The Cure, Belle & Sebastian, Joy Division, My Life Story, Le Tigre, Arcade Fire and Pulp amongst others.
They Came From the Stars, I Saw Them
"Could be the future of pop music" STEVE LAMACQ
"this might be the first time in years i listened to a 12" someone gave to me randomly and liked it, freaked out & grabbed the sleeve wondering "who is this new talent emerging?!" really lovely. i can't fucking wait to play it tonite!" JAMES MURPHY, DFA
So So Modern
New Zealander's from the future influenced by, "mathematical theology, economic cosmology, electric psychology, atomic vocabulary, chemical programmery, aural pleasury, collective jammery, at-night skateboardery, urban foolery, revolutionary ecstacy." Stylistically, think Forward Russia, Q And Not U, Black Eyes, Blood Brothers, The Faint, Hot Chip.
As this is a CLUB NIGHT, our CLUB djs come in the form of London's best university radio station, RARE FM, as well as Resident REHAB @ ROXY DJs, The Demonettes. Come down and show your support to UCL and celebrate X-mas time in style, Lets make this memorable! Doors open at 7.30pm, 2nd Floor Bar in UCL Union, £4 before 9, £5 after.
5. VOLUNTEERING
HOPE works with orphaned, disabled and street children in Africa, Asia and Europe (including the UK) and has been running successful programmes for the last three years. HOPE is looking for volunteers for their eight-week not-for-profit volunteering programmes in Uganda, India and Zambia working with severely disadvantaged children.
All programmes are fully staffed and will run from approximately mid-June until mid-August 2008 to coincide with the University holiday period. There are places for 25 students on each programme and a variety of work is available including teaching, building work, assisting income generating programmes and community outreach work.
The cost per person is £2,500 to be raised by the volunteers with some support offered by Hope for Children. The total length of stay is 8 weeks (7 weeks working on the projects and one week free). The key features of each programme are as follows:
Flight to and from the airport and the cost of visas
All food, secure accommodation (hostel-type accommodation) and transport while working on the projects
Anti-malarial medication
Fully staffed with an in-country co-ordinator
Planned group excursions
A fixed sum of approximately £90 towards the final weeks activities
A minimum £500 donation towards the project itself
All volunteers fly out together as a group and will be staying together in the same accommodation. Evenings and weekends will be free, so volunteers will get the chance to travel, relax and experience a totally different culture.
Most importantly, because their aim is to provide assistance to children in need and give volunteers an unforgettable experience, as a charity, they are totally not-for-profit. That is why, any money raised over £2,500 goes directly to the projects themselves.
Applications must be made as soon as possible, since places are given on a first come first served basis, and by 31st December 2007 at the latest. For further information about these programmes contact Clive Gerner at clivegerner@hope4c.org or phone 020 7096 8937.
6. EARN £20 BY FREEING YOUR FREEDOM
In its pursuit of making the world a little bit better (and the people in it a little bit (even) better informed individuals), this term’s ‘FREE YOUR FREEDOM’ campaign has decided that a visual representation of its subject is in order.
What to do
Scenario: This year’s Alien Christmas convention would like to introduce their people to the concepts of ‘freedom’ and ‘civil liberties’ as understood and applied by the inhabitants of planet Earth.
You are asked to submit one photograph that illustrates your perception of these values and why other cultures should be interested in them. Your submission can be:
• either as hard-copy (preferably A4/ish in size) in the Free your Freedom photograph collection ballot box at the UCLU Reception (UCL Union Building ground floor);
• or as digital (ideally less than 2MB and in .jpg format) at zczcc01@ucl.ac.uk with FYF PHOTOS in the subject line.
You should include your name and contact details, so that you can be considered for the draw. The collection opens now and will close Tuesday 11th December at 12pm.

And so, with no more Jose Mourinho-like self promotion, I wend my way back to the lonely kennel in which I am forced to reside between UCL Union news emails. All facts and figures, please courier to mc.officer@ucl.ac.uk.
And Brian Barwick? I won the world cup for England on Football Manager. I'm just saying...
