UCL Union News

The heat drives away the winter blues but attracts the bees. As the evening sun shimmers across London's giant polluting back, thousands of its citizens stretch out in artificial countryside, drinking fizzy wheat drinks and kicking around non-perfect rubber spheres yelling incomprehensibly and submitting their skin to the mercy of a giant ball of burning gas a mere 92 and a half million miles away.

Yes, summer's finally here and what in the blazes are you doing about it? Probably desperately trying to ignore it while sitting in a giant pool of your own (and others') sweat and attempting to concentrate on your revision.

That is because it is decreed that the most important exams in your life will almost always be held just as the weather starts to get really nice. And do you know why it's like that? No. And nor do I, or wikipedia. Lame.

1. A HEART-WARMING PLAY ABOUT BESTIALITY

“A play that sneaks up on you, shakes you by the shoulders, and demands your respect.”

American playwright Edward Albee, renowned for ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ has made a habit of beginning his plays with a seemingly bright and happy couple, whom he then proceeds to destroy piece by piece with Sophoclean wrath and fury. In 'The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?', we meet the successful architect Martin and his wife Stevie. Martin has just turned 50, is showered with prizes and has a major new contract. So who is Sylvia? Well, she's the goat, of course, with which (or with whom) Martin has fallen in love and is having a sexual relationship.

To expand on Mr. Albee's own cryptic: "It's about four humans and a goat and it involves relationships", ‘The Goat’ focuses on where the limits of an ostensibly liberal society are. Through showing this family in crisis, Albee challenges audience members to question their own morality in the face of other social taboos including infidelity, homosexuality, incest and, of course, bestiality.

2. ARE YOU FUNNY? OKAY, BUT ARE YOU "FUNNY HA HA"?

Are you interested in performing, devising or writing sketches for an imminent UCL Comedy Night?
Have you heard about the SKETCH SHOW AGM?
Did you know it's on Friday 16th May 5-7 in the Rehearsal Room, which as a matter of fact is in the Bloomsbury building?

(Will there be free meat pies? Will Jodie Harsh be there?)
