I know it's a bit boring to flood the forum with UCLU related questions, but two things are happening which might help you if you can't do what you want through a club or society.
Firstly, if you click the Clubs & Societies button at the top, then there's info there to help you start a new club or society.
More importantly though, we're currently looking at how to put together a Give it a Go scheme, whereby we'll put on one off activities which you can just turn up to. These might include trips around the country, classes in anything from knitting to sign language and beyond. The odd club/society taster.
I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas for one-off things that they wish they could give a go... Post some suggestions...

I'd like to play the drums, but there's no opportunity to do so at UCL

Hmm... Interesting. We have some music practice rooms. Unfortunately they aren't sound proof, and the person who lives next door to them complained because he/she works shifts and (obviously) it's very difficult to sleep with someone playing drums/amplified music through the wall. We've looked around for anywhere else we could use but haven't found anything that either doesn't need to be soundproof or that could be soundproofed for anything less than a small fortune... Having said that, there's always the Bongos and Ethnic Music Society. And some of the Live Music guys must practice somewhere, otherwise how are they any good..? I'll have a think about Music lessons for Give It A Go, though... Cheers!

There are lots of rehearsal places around UCL, especially near centre point/ charing cross road/ leicester square, with great equipment and huge rooms. The down side is that they are nearly always fully booked and are very expensive. A place that might be worth a try is the Islington Arts Factory, a converted church building in front of the holloway prison near parkhurst road. It's cheap, the equipment is o.k, and even though the rooms aren't sound proofed the good people who work there don't mind you making as much noise as you want. It would still be nice if UCLU could have some practice rooms!

play poker

unfortunately, the union had to take a line on Poker Societies and due to the laws surrounding gambling, it makes it quite dodgy to have a poker society, unless it doesn't have money changing hands.... which seems a bit pointless. Therefore the line we took is that we cannot affiliate one. annoying for many, but a legal necessity in reality.
