New Design

As you might have noticed the website has a new design. It is still a work in progress so there are some things that are not quite right yet and some things will change completly in the next time. ;)

Also this puts an end to the rumor that the Union microsites are as customizable as MySpace or Facebook.. (ok, they were in the beginning)

Deloitte Business Game

The Google event went very well - the lecture theatre was packed and I think everybody had a good time.

Our next careers event will be the Deloitte Business Game on the 6th of December - more details to follow soon.

Also the LAN session this week (Thursday, 23rd of November) will be an "old skool session". This means there will be games like Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. For more information and to sign up go to the thread at

More about the Google event...

Google Tech Talk - "Challenges in Search Quality"
Thursday 16th November, 5:30pm
UCL - MPEB 1.03

Google are delighted to make their first presentation at UCL.  Joseph O'Sullivan -- who started with Google in Silicon Valley back in 2000 and now works in the company's London engineering centre -- will explain some of the challenges involved in large-scale information retrieval across billions of webpages, as well as the challenges in understanding user intent across hundreds of millions of search queries a day.  He'll describe some of the solutions Google has developed for these challenges, and he'll take Q&A afterward.

The event is intended for Computer Science students on all degree courses and in any year; there'll also be information provided on placements and full-time jobs with Google, both in London, and further afield - from Zurich to Silicon Valley.  The talk will be followed by refreshments, and a chance to chat informally with Google employees.

If you're interested in attending, please sign up by writting an email to techSociety@gmail.com
