Hi

Another busy week at the VSU … we’re on the lookout for volunteers for a real variety of projects – gardening, mentoring young people, fundraising, administration, and a chance to help out at the gym! Plus, a number of different projects working with children, and for psychology students, or those with an interest in mental health, a chance to be get involved with the new Sanemail project.

A couple of other announcements …

One of our student-led Innovations Programme activities, The Refugee Project, is organising a refugee film festival - more info at the bottom of this email.

And note that Volunteering Society lunch time meetings are starting again next Wednesday – 1 – 2pm in the CSC Meeting Room on the second floor of the UCL Bloomsbury. The society is your chance to meet other student volunteers and get involved in how volunteering develops at UCL Union. VolSoc is independent of the Voluntary Services Unit, but works closely with us.

INTO UNIVERSITY MENTORING SCHEME – TRAINING THIS SATURDAY
Based in West London, the IU Mentoring Programme aims to encourage young people to think about higher education. Mentors work with students in years 6-13 (aged 10-18) to provide additional support and help to get a young person thinking about their future. The premise of the scheme is that students from UCL have already successfully entered university and can support and inspire children - many of whom come from backgrounds that would not necessarily actively encourage the pursuit of higher education. Mentors are expected to meet with their mentees twice a month and email or phone periodically. We provide training at UCL and additional support throughout your participation in the Programme. The next training session will be held at UCL on Saturday November 18th from 1-5pm.

For more info, email Melissa at melissa@clementjames.co.uk or phone 7221-8810.

SANEmail, which is fully funded by The Vodafone UK Foundation, will run alongside the organisation's helpline, SANELINE, to provide an additional channel of support to those affected by mental health issues. SANE is looking for young people who are interested in mental health and wish to become involved with a charity. No previous experience is needed, but good communication skills, commitment to the project for a year from January 2007 and a willingness to work in a diverse team are required. Applications are particularly welcome from those who have been personally affected by mental health issues. Core members must be based in the Greater London area. Email members may be based anywhere else in the UK.
