UCL student volunteers showcase art work at South Bank gallery
UCL student volunteers who took part in Create to Learn, a year-long collaboration between local school children and London's up and coming artists, are having their work exhibited at the gallery@oxo on the South Bank. Together, the volunteers and children are proud to be taking their artwork out of the classroom and into a gallery for their first public showing. The result is an eclectic exhibition of artwork, ranging from sculptures to mosaics and masks.
Thursday 12 ¬ - Sunday 22 July
Open daily 11am - 6pm, admission free
the.gallery@oxo, Oxo Tower Wharf, South Bank, London SE1
Create to Learn is delivered by TimeBank in partnership with Arts Community Exchange.
UCL student Candida Powell Williams worked with year 5-6 children from Lewisham on the topic Rivers and Water. 'We investigated water and rivers through a series of techniques including wax, ink resistance painting, tissue paper collages, clay sculpture and 3D drawing and modelling. Together we imagined what treasure could be found at the bottom of a river, such as shipwrecks, money chests and old boots, and then made sculptures of them. The children also made string puppets of the animals they would find in rivers.'
Fellow UCL student Vijay Patel worked with year 4 children from Lewisham on Making Masks of Imaginary Characters. 'I based my project on the fictitious characters my group were working on in their literacy class. By thinking visually, they created masks a variety of facial expressions and personalities. Along the way, they developed painting skills by focusing on layeringwashes of transparent paint with wash colouring pencils.'
