++ ONE-OFF EVENT – CHILDREN ++
NATIONAL PLAYDAY - Weds 1st Aug 07

Playday is an event which has been running for over 15 years with different themes to promote and raise awareness about the value of play. The joint Playday run by Hackney and Tower Hamlets Play Associations in Victoria Park is in it’s 3rd year and this year the theme is streets for play. For more general information on Playday, the theme and it’s history you can check the web site www.playday.org.uk

We are looking for volunteers to help with a range of duties. In 2006 we had 700 people through the park on the day so we need people to direct children and families to activities over the park area, answer questions about where toilets are and liaise with stewards. Across the park there will be playful opportunities for children 0-19. There is a stage for performances from children and young people, through the park there is creative fun, accessible bikes, large group games, an eco area with tipis, music and drumming workshops, rope courses, water play, climbing wall, an inclusive sports area and separate area for under 5’s.

Volunteers will need to be on site at 9.30 for the briefing and to help with the clear up, putting recycling in the bins etc which is done by 6.00pm.

VSU INNOVATION PROGRAMME – TEDDY BEAR CLINIC PROJECT

TWO PROJECT LEADERS REQUIRED

If you have been involved in the Teddy Bear Clinic at any time over the last three years then perhaps you might consider being one of the four project leaders this project requires. Just a reminder about the project:

It is now in it’s third year and is run mainly by medical and other science based students, but also involves other interested students.

We work with children aged between 4 – 7 years in local schools for up to an hour a week capturing their interests using teddy bears, toy medical kits and scrubs.

The project teaches the values of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. The schools are in the Islington area where approximately 8 volunteers per class work with small groups of children on various different activities. Project leaders devise and disseminate information from their highly creative session plans. The sessions involve different activities such as exercise, learning about healthy eating and the organs of the body, also how to look after yourself, role-playing and so on. Project leaders will be required to attend project leader training taking place early in the first term. So if you’re interested in being a leader and have previously volunteered as part of the project then please contact: Dee Davis d.davis@ucl.ac.uk for further details.

You will be working with Toynbee Halls young people and families team which works with young people to develop their skills and broaden their horizons.
