The team will be promoting volunteering to students in academic departments, halls of residence, clubs and societies, through the Volunteering Society magazine (HALO) and through the disabled students network.

Team members will get involved in a range of activities: organising one-off volunteering events, promoting take-up in regular volunteering, writing articles for print and for web, and other activities. If you’ve some bright ideas of your own for promoting volunteering, then we’d like you on board.

We’re also offering free ‘Communications & Presentations’ skills training on Wednesday 19 Sept 2007 and Thurs 15 Nov 2007 for all team members.

ST CLEMENT & ST JAMES COMMUNITY PROJECT
St Clement & St James Community Project are looking for enthusiastic Volunteer Tutors for our Academic Support program which is a centre-based project that provides an appealing and positive working environment where local children receive specialist support with school work.

The purpose of the Academic Support Volunteer Tutor is to help local children from aged 8-18 years with their homework in a safe and stimulating environment. Tutors provide children with support by assisting them with their work, guiding their choice of worksheets, listening to them read and helping the children on the computers. This role suits people who are great team-players, who are fun-loving and enjoy being with children. Volunteer Tutors will be excellent role models and thrive on helping children learn. Experience is not essential but enthusiasm and energy is paramount!

We like you to commit to at least one evening a week, 3.00-6.00pm preferably, although we are flexible with hours to suit the individuals needs.

We will provide Induction training as well as termly training sessions; on-going mentoring and support, email updates and questionnaires.

We are based in North Kensington – the nearest tube station is Latimer Road.

FITZROVIA YOUTH IN ACTION: 10TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY

Fitzrovia Youth In Action are celebrating their 10th birthday on Sat 1st September. The event will take place in Whitfield Street near Warren Street tube between 3-6pm and will involve closing off the road with tables and chairs, erecting a stage and marquee, providing entertainment and dinner for around 350 young people, residents, local businesses and supporters of our work. We are hoping to create a really exciting community event , and are looking for volunteers to help with the organisation, as well as photographers and somebody to film the event on the day.

++ GIVE IT A GO: HERITAGE ++
HELP OUT ENGLAND’S LARGEST CULTURAL HERITAGE EVENT OVER THE SUMMER.

Heritage Open Days volunteers wanted between 6 Aug – 10 Sept 2007.
Heritage Open Days is England’s largest free cultural heritage event which takes place each year in September. The event, coordinated by the Civic Trust and funded by English Heritage, opens up over 3,000 properties and places each year free of charge to over 1 million visitors.

Heritage Open Days takes place between 6-9 September and is currently seeking volunteers to deal with visitor enquiries and send out information to the public.

Tasks include: responding to general enquiries and giving information over the phone, searching on the Heritage Open Days website for information, printing off event details and sending these out to the public, answering calls from volunteers and packing up materials and franking envelopes.

We ask for a time commitment of at least 1 day per week. Full training will be given and we can refund volunteers’ transport costs and lunch allowance if they work a full day. In return for your time you get to work in a lively, busy office and to know that you are contributing to the public’s access and enjoyment of England’s heritage.

++ GIVE IT A GO: NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL ++
SOUTH CONNECTIONS CARNIVAL BAND

Want to enjoy Notting Hill Carnival without getting crushed?! Then come and steward for South Connections carnival band. South Connections will be celebrating their 21st year at Notting Hill and need extra volunteer stewards to help them along the route. The more stewards there are the easier it is. Stewards help with any problems with the major costumes and help to make sure the crowds do not cross through the carnival route. Occasionally it is hard work but most of the time it is the best way to enjoy the carnival and be part of it. All stewards will be given a South Connections steward’s t-shirt and a free invitation to our after-party in September. YOU MUST ATTEND A BRIEFING MEETING ON FRIDAY EVENING 17TH AUGUST.

Volunteers are also more than welcome to help us make the costumes at the Oval Theatre which will involve sticking, sewing etc, no particular dressmaking skills needed.

HELP RAISE MONEY FOR THE RAINFORESTS!

In 40 years the rainforests of the world may have disappeared forever. The Rainforest Foundation is looking for volunteers on 16 September for our annual fundraising 10K run. Held in Regents Park, the event hopes to raise enough money to help us continue our projects that aim to protect an area of rainforest the size of UK, France and Ireland combined in the Amazon and Congo Basin.

CSV ‘Go London’ offers easy, commitment-free volunteering to suit anyone in London. The activities we organise are always on Saturdays or Sundays, last 4 or 5 hours and you don't need any prior skills or experience. VOLUNTEER FOR THE CIVIC TRUST

The Civic Trust is looking for volunteers to sort and index paper archival records of the Civic Trust Awards. We are the longest running environmental design awards scheme in Europe: our archives contain information for the 5000+ schemes that have been recognised by the Awards scheme. At present, the archives are in paper format, and the Trust wishes to translate these into a publicly accessible digital resource. This role would suit someone who is looking for experience in an office, charity or environmental field and would be particularly beneficial to someone interested in architecture, the built environment or social history.

KIDS COMPANY

Kids Company supports children with severe behavioral, emotional and social difficulties resulting from significant childhood trauma and/or neglect.
We are currently supporting around 660 children at the Arches II, our drop-in and education centre in South London, 100 children in our post-sixteen educational institute, the Urban Academy, and a further 10,000 children in 33 schools across London.

Kids Company reaches these children through word-of-mouth on the streets. The work done in the 33 primary schools is invaluable to our programme and gives kids more opportunities to make use of our service. We aim to increase the amount of sport in these schools and would like your help in providing activities during the lunch break and after school. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR YOUTH WORK PROJECT IN RUSSELL SQUARE.

Coram's Fields Youth Centre are looking for two motivated and capable students to help run their summer programme. This programme will take place during the months of August and September. Candidates should have a vague knowledge of the principles of youth work. Experience would be beneficial, but not essential. Most importantly candidates should be highly motivated, responsible and hardworking. In turn, successful candidates will gain valuable insight into mentoring youth work projects, designing and delivering projects and funding applications.

Candidates willing to complete 80 hours on a voluntary basis will be put forward for a certificate in Youth Work.

HELP SUPPORT PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV

If you are considering working in Fundraising or Advocacy then this opportunity may interest you. The Cara Trust is looking for an “Individual Financial Support Grant Applications” volunteer to help service users apply to a wide range of small grant funders held on the Funder-Finder database. This Financial Support service helps service users who are on a low income and need help with essential items, respite holidays, etc. The Cara Trust is a community of friendship of people with HIV. Accordingly, Cara is a very supportive place to volunteer and our service users are very appreciative of financial help that contributes to an improvement in their quality of life. As well as appreciation volunteers will also receive references from us and relevant work experience if they are interested in pursuing jobs in advocacy or fundraising. Hands-on guidance on how to approach the role will be given over the course of two months by Chris Woolls, Director.

Wanted:- bright, quick thinking interns to help put together funding bids for a variety of posts in thriving care organisation.

This is a key opportunity to experience how funds are raised and bids put together to series of funders, including (potentially) the National Lottery.

At least one afternoon a weeks commitment required. PC literacy essential, a head for figures and eye for layout helps too! You’ll receive induction, supervision, expenses and a guaranteed reference when you move on.

TOYNBEE HALL SAFE IMPACT RESEARCHERS

SAFE (Services Against Financial Exclusion) at Toynbee Hall helped many people open bank accounts over the last few years. Volunteers are needed to research the impact this has had through contacting former clients and arranging, conducting and recording interviews. Flexible hours during two weeks in August. This role will be ideal for someone with good verbal and written English and basic understanding of social exclusion. The volunteer will gain experience of conducting research within a voluntary sector organisation and of work within a sector-leading financial inclusion project.

TOYNBEE HALL MAGAZINE

Toynbee Hall is currently carrying out a large scale fundraising campaign and we are going to produce a special edition of our Toynbee Hall Magazine to promote this. We are looking for volunteers to carry out interviews with a selection of Toynbee Hall’s Residential Volunteers and then write them up. Successful interviews will be published in the magazine (subject to editing) and interviewers will get a by-line. We will select interesting candidates to be interviewed and provide volunteers with a template of questions to ask (you are welcome to develop and add to this if you have further ideas). We will also provide volunteers with training around interview skills.

If you think you might be interested please reply, giving an idea of what your availability is like (day time, evenings etc). Interviews would need to be completed by mid-September.
