CAPITAL'S ENGINEERS URGED TO GIVE A DAY TO CHANGE A LIFE

The London Engineering Project (LEP) is urging the capital's black and minority ethnic engineers to give a day of their time every year in schools. They are being asked to be ambassadors for their professions and show what they have achieved as role models for the next generation. The aim is to inspire and motivate young people to follow in their footsteps and help address the lack of black and minority ethnic young people currently entering jobs which are vital to the future of the economy and have particular significance to the capital.

By securing a few hours of these professionals time, the LEP hopes that more school students will thrive in their classroom science and technology studies, apply for a degree courses and then go on into rewarding careers.

The project is supported by The Royal Academy of Engineering which is championing the aim of attracting the next generation of engineers and scientists from black and minority ethnic communities.
Any working engineer, scientist or students of these disciplines interested in getting involved from September 2007 should contact marlon.brown@ucl.ac.uk

BELSIZE WOOD CONSERVATION PROJECT
Saturday 6 October
Give-It-A-Go
A chance to be in at the beginning of a beautiful new nature reserve!

Belsize Wood is a small woodland nature reserve in a very urban area. It is adjacent to Russell Nurseries Estate, whose residents (particularly the youngsters) appreciate it as a green oasis and a place to enjoy wildlife that they otherwise have little contact with. We have recently obtained access to some adjacent woodland, which we are also turning into prime nature reserve which will be safe for people and wildlife.
The work here consists of constructing paths and steps to give access, and installing bird and bat boxes, a bird feeding station and clearing the ground of ivy ready for planting hundreds of Spring bulbs. Volunteers are needed from 11am to 3pm. All equipment provided, no experience necessary.

For more information please contact p.wahlqvist@ucl.ac.uk

WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER
Did you volunteer at an exciting project here in the UK during the summer months? If so then why not tell others about it and help to market volunteering to your fellow students through Pi Squared, the Union paper.

We’re looking for people to write a piece to be included in this years first edition of Pi Squared going out in mid October. Please send your story which should be no longer than 500 words along to d.davis@ucl.ac.uk who will then pass it on to the editor. Include the following:
Name, age, course, where you volunteered, what made you want to volunteer with that particular organisation, your role and what it entailed, the funniest thing that happened to you while there, how you think it may have changed you, what you’ve learned from it and how you might be able to apply this to your future career. Basically in summary what might be your response to someone who says, ‘but volunteering is quite boring really, isn’t it?’ Also just so that it can be possible to see that you do lots of other things which other students also do, please give us some more random information like: your favourite band, your favourite Union event/night last year, your favourite comedy show of the moment.

Your story needs to be about volunteering in the UK only.

Look forward to hearing from you.
