UCL Union’s Voluntary Services Unit has been chosen, by Timebank, a national volunteering charity, to run a pilot programme called Junction 49 to support student-led volunteering activities.
Junction 49 is a website and creative space where students can share ideas, find opportunities to take action and connect with like minded people and inspiring organisations. It has ideas and information about student-led volunteering activities whether you want to do something big, or small, to improve your community.
We are holding Junction49 Briefing sessions on Tuesday 9/10, 1-2pm, in the Rehearsal Room UCL Bloomsbury and on Tuesday 9/10,5-6pm, in G23 Pearson Building in Gower Street, where we will run through more details and we hope you can come along to one of these.

++VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HEART DISEASE AND OBESITY RESEARCH++
The Centre for Clinical Pharmacology at UCL is carrying out various research studies aiming to further our understanding of heart disease and stroke, its causes and treatment. We are looking for volunteers that may be able to assist with two studies in particular.
The first study on healthy male and female volunteers is looking at blood vessel function. We need volunteers who are 18-45 years of age, healthy, non-smokers and not on regular medication including the contraceptive pill.
This work will involve more than one visit and each session will last approximately 1-2 hours. If you are interested please contact Dr Michael Okorie on m.okorie@ucl.ac.uk or joanne.harris@ucl.ac.uk (Research Nurse) and we will send you an information sheet.
The second study focuses on obesity and is looking at chemicals that may be involved in the relationship between fat tissue and heart disease. For this study we are looking for MEN only in the OVERWEIGHT category, preferably with a Body Mass Index of over 30. (Divide your weight in kilos by your height in metres squared to obtain your BMI) Again you need to be healthy, non-smokers and on no regular medication. The age range is 21-50 years. The study involves taking low dose aspirin for 10 days and clinic visits for blood tests and fat samples to be taken by our medical team. In the UK 1 in 7 people suffer from hearing difficulties, and with the average age of the population increasing with more people living longer, this figure is expected to rise. This means that it is important to learn how to communicate with deaf people as they make up a significant proportion of our community. If you want to learn more about the deaf community and how to communicate more effectively with them, then UCL Deaf Awareness is for you!
We will be providing weekly training sessions, where you will be learning some British Sign Language (BSL), Sign Supported English (SSE) and much more! To find out more about what our project offers you and how you can help raise deaf awareness, come along to our introduction meeting on Wednesday 10th October at 3pm in room 107, 25 Gordon SQUARE.

Volunteering with us is a great opportunity – you’ll develop your communication skills and meet lots of new people. We’ll also give you full training, and cover your travel expenses.

Joint university event! Volunteers needed to help with vegetation management and other nature conservation tasks in Little Wormwood Scrubs Park. This is an excellent opportunity for volunteers to get their 'hands dirty' in real nature conservation in the company of students from other London universities. Groundwork West London will provide instruction and supervision of volunteers on the day. Tools and gloves will be provided, and a qualified first aider will be present at all times. Travel expenses covered.

'Food 4 Thought' (F4T) is a study support project supporting students in secondary education. All our sessions are culturally sensitive and strive to meet individual needs. Our supporting network includes schools, universities, referring agencies, Tower Hamlets Out of School Hours Learning, Aim Higher, youth organisations, Volunteer Centre Tower Hamlets, and the Department of Education for Tower Hamlets.

Innovations Programme - One More Language Skills Pool Leader (LSP) and Volunteers Needed
Are you fluent in more than one language? Do you love using your other language/s? If yes, the Language Skills Pool is ideal for you. It is a free translation agency set up by UCL students for charities and has won a Higher Education Award for innovation and excellence.
You will be asked to translate various documents such as letters, posters and leaflets, or to proof read the translation of a fellow volunteer. You will gain valuable experience whilst helping other people. Some examples of translations completed by the LSP include a poster for Age Concern, fact sheets for Saneline, a mental health charity, and information sheets for the National Trust. Volunteers will attend a training session in community translation and will be invited to a number of socials.
Whilst requiring volunteers to be reliable once having accepted a translation task, it is a very flexible form of volunteering. You can work from home at your own pace completing translation tasks within reasonable time scales and if you are too busy to take on a translation when asked, you can decline and another volunteer in the pool will be approached. You need to be a native speaker or at an advanced level i.e. third or final year language students, postgraduate level or ERASMUS students.
The role for leader for the above project will require that you liaise by email with local community organisations providing them with volunteers to do their translations. Leaders will also liaise with the VSU, attend project leader training, organise socials, and promote the work of the project to new organisations and within UCL depts. Individual roles exist for volunteers interested in writing for the Volunteering Societies, Halo magazine, the Union s Pi and Pi Squared, contributing to the clubs and societies programmes transmitted by the Union s Rare FM and collaborating with the Film and TV Society to make a short documentary piece on the VSU.
It is hoped that training will be available for these roles.
