VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR STREETLEAGUE TOURNAMENT
GIVE-IT-A-GO ONE OFF VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY

STRRET LEAGUE UK!!!
Volunteers are needed to help ensure the smooth running of a one day football tournament - 25 Oct 10am-4pm Twice a year, Street League (a football league for homeless people) holds ‘twinning’ tournaments for some of our regular players and employees from our corporate sponsors. The corporate employees and players join together to make up 11-a-side teams.

These twinning tournaments are a really good example of how football can break down barriers and act as a unifying factor amongst people who come from very different backgrounds. They start off with ‘ice breakers’ to get everyone talking and working together, and then the teams play in a tournament ending in a final followed by presentations of cups.

Volunteers will help with all aspects of running the tournament, including helping staff co-ordinate the teams, registering players at the start of the day, supervising the teams and general administration.

VOLUNTEER EVENTS ORGANISERS WANTED
THE PHILIP LAWRENCE AWARDS
The Philip Lawrence Awards are now in their 12th year. They work from the premise that young people are their own best role models and that, given a chance, they can transform their communities through vision and determination. The Awards recognise young people from all over the country (usually between the ages of 10 and 20) who have created and implemented projects which are designed to tackle cutting-edge issues in their communities: crime, racial tension, homophobia, drug abuse, anti-social behaviour etc.

The Award ceremony held each December in the UCL Bloomsbury is a celebration and a recognition of their efforts. Hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald, there is a large performance element of music and dance by young people in various colleges and schools - and sometimes drawn from past award winners. The Home Secretary also attends and makes a speech.

The day before the ceremony has always been earmarked as a time when past winners can get together to brainstorm, to inspire - and (importantly!) to socialise and make new friends. Many of the young people live in deprived areas and in testing circumstances. Some may still be in education, others will not have found that path an easy one.

We’re looking for a group of UCL students who could help organise the reunion event for past winners (to take place on the 3rd December). We’re looking for people with ideas, energy and ability to make a really special event, working in partnership with some of the previous award winners.

Interested? To find out more, email John at j.braime@ucl.ac.uk

DYNAMIC AND COMMITTED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
INTO-UNIVERSITY
Over the last six years IntoUniversity has evolved into a national charity providing local learning centres where young people are inspired to achieve.

There are currently two centres in deprived areas of London - North Kensington and Lambeth - each offering aspirational and supportive educational projects for local primary and secondary inner-city London pupils.

Both centres require enthusiastic, committed and dynamic volunteers. We will be holding a training session to recruit for potential volunteers to the Academic Support Programme. These volunteers are needed to assist in after school sessions helping pupils with school work and providing the encouragement they need to succeed.

The service runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 3.30-6pm and volunteers are asked to commit to at least one session per week although shifts are flexible to suit your needs.Training and induction are provided.

Please email marlon.brown@ucl.ac.uk for more information.

GIVE-IT-A-GO ONE OFF VOLUNTEERING

THE CALTHORPE PROJECT
We have various arts, sports, cooking activities we need assistance with- including a fundraising day and a special apple day event. The volunteers would be expected to accompany our playstaff on the activities and help the children to make things and to play sports to cook and to generally have fun.

We are normally inundated with children and are usually short-staffed so would welcome any volunteers. Volunteers who really enjoy the work are able to continue volunteering on our Saturday club and access training in playwork, which would lead to employment.

Please contact p.wahlqvist@ucl.ac.uk for more information.

COULD YOU BE A VOLUNTEER ROLE-MODEL?
CHANCE UK
Chance UK works with young boys (5-11) who often go through their early years without a positive male role model in their lives. You dont need a high flyer you just need to remember what its like to be a boy growing up.

We are holding an introductory evening on Thursday 1st November 2007 from 6pm-7:30pm in our offices in Finsbury Park. There will be no pressure, just a pleasant evening with light refreshments and a chance to chat with someone who is already a mentor.

Please contact marlon.brown@ucl.ac.uk for more information.
