INTOUNIVERSITY
‘BUDDY’

This scheme was set up to give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the chance to find out about studying at university. Volunteers will act as a ‘buddy’ to the Y8 pupils who will be discovering what university life is all about.

How the Buddy Scheme works is that on 7th of July, during the morning session held at our centre, Into University in North Kensington, the pupils will find out about university life, meet students studying at UCL and take part in a Media & Journalism activity.

This will then be followed by a full day's visit to UCL on the 9th of July, where pupils will be grouped in pairs with a student volunteer. They will complete a tour of the campus to find out about studying at university. There will be the opportunity here to befriend the university students and ask questions in an informal context. You, as buddies, can make this as exciting as possible with your own personal contacts - visits to labs or student rooms. The pupils will then go on to complete a Media & Journalism activity on-site and finish with a mini-ceremony to mark their day and achievements.

For more information please contact Oliver on oliver.peachey@ucl.ac.uk.

GREEN SCHOOLS UCL
Interested in environmental issues? Want the chance to teach? JOIN US at Green Schools UCL for 2009-10!

We are a student volunteer team working in local London schools to promote and support environmental education and action. We achieve this through a combination of delivering class workshops on the main themes of water, waste, energy and climate change – together with environmental project work at the schools, such as developing an organic school garden.
No teaching experience is required! We are looking for keen, committed students, who can offer their time to teach, and also we look to use volunteers’ ideas and travel experiences to develop new, exciting class workshops based on real-life case studies.

For example, when teaching about water issues, we include one session on local and national UK water issues, and a following session on international water issues, which in the past has included case studies from Sierra Leone, Mexico and China – focusing on a range of water issues from civil war and water distribution problems, to droughts, and major controversial dam projects. So there is huge scope for getting involved and contributing your own ideas and experiences in the workshops and project work that we deliver in schools.

You can get in touch by emailing us at green_school_project@hotmail.co.uk. Thanks!

FREIGHTLINERS FARM
FREIGHTLINERS KNITTING CIRCLE

New Members (and Leaders!) needed!

To all those who knit or want to knit. I have set up a knitting group on Wednesday afternoons 3-4pm at Freightliners farm in Islington (5min walk from Caledonian Road tube station). The city farm is a lovely place to spend a relaxing Wednesday afternoon. It has a real community feel to it, and the animals are simply delightful; (cows, goats, sheep who have recently given birth to 5 lambs, giant white rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, very ugly pigs!)

The knitting group is open to all, students, members of the community, old, young, people with learning difficulties, males, females, beginners, knitting experts etc... The aim was to get more craft activities on the farm, teach people new skills, and provide a therapeutic atmosphere where people could chat, exchange ideas and enjoy the farm.

I am looking for someone to replace me in leading the group, as I will not be able to continue with it past July. I would like to welcome all students to come and join the knitting group and a few who can already knit who would be willing to share the leadership of it. It takes very little organisation, and the main thing is being there 3pm-4pm to teach people the basics (casting on, knitting, purl, casting off). It is lots of fun and I have met so many lovely people.

If you are interested please contact me (Alice Gallen) via j.braime@ucl.ac.uk.

CHILDRENS COUNTRY HOLIDAYS FUND
ACTIVITY BREAK VOLUNTEER

What does a CCHF Volunteer get to do?
The volunteers’ role is to join in with whatever fun and games the week may bring: to get wet, sing, dance, laugh, play games, stay awake, ride bikes, climb, swim and lots, lots more! Also, volunteers should be sensible and aware; help, listen, support, encourage and mediate.

But don’t panic … you won’t be alone. There will be a team leader and other volunteers helping and supporting your efforts.

Your job is to be there for the children if they need it ... or even if they don’t!
  • To give encouragement and support to a child who has low self-esteem.
  • To listen to a child who may be scared or homesick.
  • To enter into the child's world and be silly and have fun!
  • To understand that, generally, the child's behaviour is a direct result of the environment they have just left. That is, after all, why a child comes to CCHF!
Our breaks are designed with children in mind so don’t worry about the activities being too strenuous or challenging. We want you to have a positive experience on our Breaks! So please enjoy them!

To be a CCHF Volunteer you must:
  • Be over 18 years old. However, we welcome 16-17 year olds to work alongside other volunteers and learn the ropes.
  • Be able to volunteer for 6 consecutive days or a weekend, attend training and stay with us residentially.
  • Have completed a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check and be able to provide two reference checks before you volunteer.
  • Enjoy working with children and have the energy, enthusiasm and empathy to work with children from underprivileged and disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Hopefully have fun, bring a smile and give the children a fantastic break
  • Excellent training and support
As a CCHF Volunteer you will get:
  • The chance to develop new skills
  • Experience of working with children and young people (CYP)
  • The opportunity to make a real difference to a child’s or a young person's life
  • A new challenge
  • The chance to meet new people
  • Excellent experience for your CV and career advancement!
To find out more, email Oliver on oliver.peachey@ucl.ac.uk.
