November Volunteering Fair Report by Helen Huang

Beyond the usual baskets of wrapped chocolate treats and vibrant colourful posters, the latest UCL Volunteering Fair held in the South Cloisters on 23 November boasted an impressive and diverse collection of over 35 charities and student-run community projects.

The options available appeared endless and there was something for everyone who turned up: one could choose to teach disadvantaged children in Chalk Farm, befriend teenagers affected by HIV, or make a difference to refugees. All it took was a little scribble on the sign-up sheet and an open mind.

Student project leaders present at the fair were enthusiastic and more than happy to share their past experiences in volunteering. Marta Dravecka, a second-year natural sciences student currently involved in the Maths Challenge programme for children, described many positive impacts of volunteering and acknowledged that she has since developed a much greater sense of commitment and responsibility.

Madiha Khan, a Masters student in law who is heading the project One Degree, believes that volunteering is a unique hands-on experience that not only inspires others, but motivates oneself. One Degree is aimed at tutoring A-level students from disadvantaged backgrounds who find it difficult to cope with their studies.

Whilst the Volunteering Fair is an ideal opportunity for students to find out more about getting involved in longer term volunteering, those unsure about making commitment can always take part in one-off events. These can easily be found in on the VSU website, UCLU’s Give-It-A-Go Online Guide or by contacting the UCLU Volunteering Services Unit. Volunteering has neither boundaries nor requirements, and opportunities are abundant. While it might take up a bit of time, the experience will always be well worth it. As Winston Churchill once said, ‘You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.’
