Fiona Davidson works in UCL's Development and Corporate Communications Office. She and her colleagues took part in a one-off volunteering event at Freightliners City Farm in Holloway.
How did you get involved in volunteering with Freightliners Farm?
Our office had decided it would be a good idea to do some type of regular Volunteering - to contribute to our local community and as a way of team building. We are a big office made up of lots of teams - we are often huddled in front of our computers with little social interaction between teams.
What have you enjoyed the most about your volunteering?
It was good to something completely different, ¬ even if it was shoveling a huge pile of manure (but I did have plenty of room on the tube home). The farm does a lot of work with disadvantaged children in the area, so it felt good to contribute to something so worthwhile, even if it was only for a few
hours. And I did get the chance to chat with colleagues that I don¹t usually get the opportunity to talk with.
What has been the most challenging?
I can¹t say that my volunteering was challenging, but some of my colleagues had some physically challenging duties, such as lifting very heavy paving slabs. Those who were returning were very pleased to see the work they had done previously, such as the building of the butterfly enclosure, completed and in use.
