Description
Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) is an international organisation founded in 1922 to provide port-based support for vulnerable sea-farers, irrespective of their race, creed or nationality. In Great Britain AOS has an active presence in 41 ports.
95% of all goods we use and consume are transported by sea. Over recent years the international maritime industry has changed radically. Average turnaround time for ships in port has been reduced to just 12 hours and ports have been relocated to areas away from towns and traditional port centres. All this has resulted in problematic working conditions for seafarers.
The considerable starins placed on to the modern seafarer include low pay, prolonged isolation, separation form their faimilies for up to 12 months at a time and a genberal lack of access to basic services and social interaction. They also spend a majority of their time in hazardous working conditions, which can cause recurrent mental and physical strain.
Volunteers are needed to assist with general administration in the National Office. This includes helping with mailings, photocopying, data entry and filing as well as assistance on specific projects.
This is an excellent opportunity to become part of a rapidly expanding charity. The small team are very welcoming and will give you every assistance to carry out your volunteering. You will receive full training and lots of support.
