Fitzrovia Youth in Action

Involve young people in organising projects that benefit their community

Main Activity

Workshops and meetings with young people to facilitate self-directed community action; football

Description

Fitzrovia Youth in Action is an award-winning community project based in the Warren Street area of central London. We involve young people in self-directed community action; young people identifying issues of concern and doing something about it themselves. Much of our work involves young people who hang around the Warren football pitch and play area in Whitfied St, W1. Young adults formed the group in 1997, in a bid to rid the Warren of vandalism and anti-social behaviour, which had led to tension between local residents and the young people spending time outside their homes.
Projects often have themes connected to environmental, inter-generational or racial issues. Projects might address tensions between groups of young people or between young people and older generations. Recent projects organised by young people include; drug project; peer research project; Camden Unity Cup football tourament; planting project; street party project. Young people are centrally involved in our work and take much responsibility in terms of planning and organising their projects. We also provide a football scheme in which we provide training sessions and opportunities for competitive football for 10 - 18 year olds.
