Into University, St Clement & St James Community Development Project
It is an innovative, free service providing ongoing welfare and learning support for children and young people most at risk of failing to realise their academic potential due to social, economic, cultural and educational disadvantage. Its purpose is to encourage and support children and young people to work towards entering higher education and so increase their opportunities for further training and employment. The scheme offers practical learning support with homework and coursework, advice about decision-making, help with university applications and project and university-based activities to introduce children and young people to university life.
Main Activity
Wednesday Walk-in, 2-5.45pm: Provides advice and help with GCSE/AS/A/degree options, coursework, revision and exam techniques; UCAS forms, interview techniques, accessing on-line virtual universities and UCAS materials; gap years; post-university options; general advice outside school about learning/school issues.
Half-term FOCUS weeks: Themed weeks of subject-based activities culminating in a visit to a university and a graduation day. The visit to a university is a valuable hands-on taste of university life during term time.
Extending Horizons Weekends: twice yearly educational weekends designed to add another dimension to the IU programme giving users an experience most of them would not otherwise have helping to raise their aspiration and motivation to achieve at school.
Mentoring: We work with partner campuses in the University of London to set up a mentoring scheme for Into University users. First stage mentoring from years 6-8, trained mentor accompanies. Second stage mentoring year 9 up, trained mentor who is a university student.
Schools Outreach: We employ a Schools Liason Officer to develop and maintain links with students and their teachers in their school setting.
Aspire and Achieve Days: Organised days to encourage and motivate young people.

Description
Based at the St Clement and St James Community Project in West London, the Into University Mentoring Programme aims to encourage young people to think about higher education. Mentors work with students in years 6-13 (aged 10-18) to provide additional support and help to get their young person thinking about their future. The premise of the scheme is that students from UCL have already successfully entered into university and thus can support, incite, and inspire the children - many of whom come from backgrounds that would not necessarily actively encourage the pursuit of higher education. Mentors are expected to meet with their mentee twice a month and email or phone periodically. We provide free training at UCL and additional support throughout your participation in the programme. If you are interested, plase contact the mentoring co-ordinator at 020 7221 8810 or Melissa@clementjames.co.uk. This is a wonderful opportunity to help young people realise their potential and have a fantastic time.
