Main Activity

We are part of Camden On-Line and are able to offer people access to computers and basic computing skills to improve their employment potential. We also offer ESOL/Sewing classes to members of our local community for whom English is not their first language. In partnership with other providers we run a range of support services, a Pre-School, an After School Club, activities for young people aged 10-14 and a Youth Club and a range of activities for Under 5’s and their parents and carers.

Description

We offer a rewarding insight into an interesting and diverse community outside the academic world and the opportunity to help shape its development through volunteering and discussion with users and other members of the organisation.
Maiden Lane Community Centre (MLCC) is situated at the heart of Maiden Lane Estate which is recognised as one of the most deprived social housing estates in London. We are a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. We have a small staff group and an active voluntary management committee. The community centre is well used and it is usually a hive of activities. We also have a number of long-term volunteers who support the activities of the centre through their work. We aim to recruit up to 10 volunteers to work with this group in order to improve their English, reduce sense of isolation, increase self-esteem and integration into the community. Volunteers will gain experience of working with people of various backgrounds and cultures, people who are learning English, an inner city community centre; and training in diversity, disability awareness and equal opportunities. Depending on additional funding, we may also be able to provide group visits to museums and exhibitions, certificated first aid training and production of ESOL learning materials.
