Maytree Respite Centre

To provide sanctuary for people in a sucidal crisis.

Main Activity

Befriending, accepting referrals, and making arrangements for further help for the guests at Maytree.

Description

Maytree is a short term sanctuary for the suicidal. "There are times when there is no escape; everything one sees, everything one thinks about reinforces the decision to kill yourself…That's when one needs a refuge; somewhere to take time out.."

The thought of suicide is experienced by many, albeit fleetingly; for some 5000 people per year in the UK, the thought becomes an act. Not only is suicide a tragic way to end life but it leaves those bereaved by suicide, devastated. Maytree is a charity staffed predominately by volunteers, led by and supported by professionals. Maytree's aim is to save lives and to relieve suffering. Its focus is on those at serious and immediate risk of suicide. It seeks to offer those who stay at Maytree a calm, supportive environment - a place, and the space and time to rest, reflect, talk and be "befriended" without pressure or judgement.
