Notting Hill Housing Trust
Notting Hill Housing provide affordable permanent homes for the most vulnerable in society. We aim to help tenants become homeowners, creating sustainable communities and better living environments. NH Volunteers Project was originally set up as a support mechanism for volunteers in our charity shops and we have continued to recruit volunteers to help our more isolated and vulnerable tenants.
Main Activity
Notting Hill houses people in need, helps tenants become home owners and uses the profits to build mixed and sustainable communities. We assist our tenants to engage in their community through various community development projects. With the help of volunteers we help the most vulnerable tenants by providing practical and emotional support.
Description
The Volunteers Project at Notting Hill Housing was set up to help our most vulnerable and isolated tenants. Besides helping individual tenants in their own homes we also run a number of supported housing schemes across London incorporating many different volunteer opportunities working with older people and people with learning difficulties. As a volunteer for Notting Hill you can help through mentoring young people or people trying to find work, befriending an elderly person or assisting one of our schemes by organising social activities for the tenants. This could also include setting up and running your own regular activities such as a coffee morning or quiz night or if you have specific skills like Spanish classes or flamenco dancing. Other ways you can help out is through gardening and decorating, this can be in groups or alone and will often be a one off job to help a disabled tenant for example who is unable to paint their own living room or clear their garden. These projects really make a tangible difference to the lives of our tenants and can be very rewarding whilst gaining experience. We provide travel and lunch expenses, training and support for all our volunteers.
