ReachOut!

Reachout! is a children's charity, working primarily with boys and girls aged 9-13. We have three core aims which we believe can be worked towards through effective mentoring by university students:
i) to achieve an improvement in attendance and academic performance, especially English and Maths, via a one-to-one relationship with a university student mentor as a way to become better prepared for secondary school and higher education.

Ii)) to progress overall character development through participation in team exercises, sports coaching and personal interaction on a 1-to-1 basis.

iii) to provide a role-model for the children that will expose them to different ideas and higher aspirations and inspire them in their studies and to encourage them to persue tertiary education.

Main Activity

Reachout! runs 2 types of programmes during the academic year. The ReachOut! Midweek Mentoring Programme runs on weekdays during the school term. The University students visit a school for two hours a week throughout the university academic year. Each student becomes a mentor to a particular child for the whole year, working with that child in the one-to-one session.

A typical ReachOut! midweek session might involve meeting the children at 3.30 in a designated area of the school where they are allowed a snack and a drink before they go outside to play some football with volunteers. They will then head back to some classrooms where they spread out and get on with some pre-set work with their mentor, be it Maths, English or reading practice, or maybe even something else. Then, to finish up they rejoin and do a group activity!

Description

Reachout! Has been running in Manchester for 10 years. Last year it conducted a successful pilot programme with 12 children at the jubilee school in Hackney and ran a Summer Programme on the grounds of the now closed Kingsland school in Hackney in partnership with the A-space, which was followed this year by running successful term time programmes at De Beauvoir Primary School and again at Jubilee Primary School. The Summer programme had 15 children from local primary schools attending, with the day commencing at 10am and running through 4pm every weekday for 2 weeks. The children attended 'classes' which worked on improving their English and Maths skills, whilst being fun and relevant to them, and then after a break for lunch there was I varied sports programme which included football, basketball, ultimate frisbee and unihoc. There were also excursions to the London Aquarium and the Science Museum. We ran a much improved Summer Programme this year with 32 boys aged 9-12 from over 8 schools attending for 4 weeks at the B6 College in Lower Clapton. We are now entering our 2nd year of funded work in Hackney.

Volunteers are more than welcome on all our programmes, but primarily for the Midweek Mentoring Programme. There is also the possibility of paid work on the Summer Programme for experienced volunteers.
