Sunnyside Community Gardens

Sunnyside Community Gardens is a registered charity that provides horticultural therapy to people who experience mental health special needs and physical disabilities.

Main Activity

Horticultural therapy sessions in the gardens, aimed at people with mental health issues, special needs and physical disabilities (year round). Development of a Sensory Garden Trail to encourage greater use and enjoyment of the garden by people of experiencing disabilities (2007-2008)

Description

Could you assist and work alongside our garden volunteers who have a range of support needs (for example people with learning difficulties, mental health problems or physical impairments). You will join a friendly team of staff and volunteers with ongoing support and informal training offered.

You do not need any skills in gardening, just a willingness to support others who are learning. Volunteers are involved in gardening and conservation work at our tranquil community garden site. The site includes a lawn and herbaceous garden, woodland wildlife area and pond, composting, vegetable growing section with a polytunnel, and a small ecology centre.

During 2007-08 we are also developing a Sensory Garden Trail through the gardens. There are a range of activities that you can get involved in including:
• Supporting people to carry out a sensory mapping exercise
• Garden design
• Implementation of design,
• Developing interpretation material
• Promoting the trail to people with a disability

You can commit to any regular period of time during our opening hours (10am-4pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday). The work is good fun, sometimes wet and tiring but hugely rewarding.
