The Civic Trust

It is the leading UK charity dedicated to bringing vitality, sustainability and high quality design to the built environment. The Trust works with people to promote thriving towns and villages, developing dynamic partnerships between communities, government and business to deliver regeneration and local improvement.

Main Activity

We are involved in a range of projects and programmes which form part of our continuing campaign to make better places for people to live and work:
- We empower individuals and communities of all ages and backgrounds to improve the places they live.
- We raise awareness of the need to create environments which bring out the best in people, celebrate the best places, and expect the highest quality for all communities.
- We champion vibrant, inclusive towns and cities, and show how places can be better.
- We work in partnership with the public sector, private companies, voluntary organisations and communities to campaign and influence.

Description

Volunteers will work with achieving The Civic Trust Awards. They are the largest and most comprehensive environmental design awards scheme in Europe. The scheme has been established for 47 years, during which time it has become highly respected for recognising architecture and environmental design that makes an exceptional contribution to our built environment. The aim of the Awards is to encourage the very best in our built environment, improving it for us all.

It is the Trust’s intention to actually revisit all the schemes ‘on the ground’ eventually, to retrospectively assess their lifetime success / failure, and the assaying of the archives is the first step to doing this.

If you are interested in social history and the built environment of the UK in the past 50 years, then this work would be of interest.
