The Stuart Low Trust
Our formal charitable objects are "the protection and preservation of public health and the relief of those suffering from mental, emotional or psychological illness or distress".
Main Activity
We run evening/weekend drop-ins and outings especially for people affected by mental health problems, whether their own or others'. We offer some form of recreational/therapeutic activity each week. We are testing and developing different strands of activity, such as alternative therapies, spirituality, exercise, food and petcare. Last year, we organised a group holiday to France, enjoyed by seven local people. Next year, we are planning 3 more holidays in Britain.
Description
The Stuart Low Trust (SLT) is a small lslington-based charity, set up in 1999. Our special priority is addressing the needs of people with psychiatric problems. However, our formal charitable objects are "the protection and preservation of public health and the relief of those suffering from mental, emothinal or psychological illness or distress". This recognizes the inter-relationship between physical, mental and social well-being. Every week we run evening/weekend drop-ins and outings for people affected by mental health problems. We are developing different strands of activity, such as alternative therapies, spirituality, exercise, food and petcare. We have recently organised a group holiday to France, enjoyed by seven local people. Three more holidays are planned this year.
On average, our events are attended by 40 guests - a mixture of psychiatric service users, carers and members of the local community. Our mailing list currently covers 400 names, and is growing daily. We have a website, www.slt.org.uk, produce a newsletter every two months, and a monthly drop-in flier.
We actively involve and encourage the ever-growing number of attendees and volunteers to take part in the delivery and development of activities, in order to increase our scope and diversity, and to develop the people. We find supporting people as appropriate includes delegation, inclusiveness and empowerment.
