Westminster Libraries Homework Clubs
Homework clubs will be run as part of the "lifelong learning" drive to encourage children to retrieve and use information, building up their skills, knowledge and confidence.
Main Activity
The homework clubs will provide a quiet space for children to complete the homework they are set in schools, with the assistance of library staff and volunteers.
Note: Currently looking for volunteers for Tuesdays (Maida Vale, Pimlico and St John's Wood) and Thursdays (Church Street, Victoria, Mayfair), and possibly Mondays (Queens Park). Also, Wednesdays (Marylebone and Queen's Park).

Description
Out-of-school Study Support has been found to increase children's academic performance, to increase their attendance in school and to raise their self-esteem. After school homework clubs provide a different learning environment for children and young people, where they are able to learn together with their friends in a more relaxed atmosphere than at school and, perhaps, at home. There will be resources available to them, such as books, CD-ROMs and the Internet which broaden their scope for learning. Westminster Homework Clubs will be based in areas where pupils tend to underachieve in school. Underachieving could be due to low expectations from family, low self-esteem, speaking English as a second language, unstable home-life, or lack of space at home to do homework. The Homework clubs will provide space for homework to be done, resources to make learning more interesting and accessible and, suppport from Homework Helpers and library staff, who can help children to locate and use relevant information. The most import factor of the clubs will be that they will encouage children to learn in a relaxed, encouraging, friendly environment.
